To identify, mobilize, rehabilitate, treat and
empower South Sudanese leprosy and
neglected diseases afflicted persons and
advocate for all causes highlighting and
addressing tropical and neglected diseases in
South Sudan
The conflict and economic challenges have
added to the already fragile situation of needy
sections of the communities suffering from
certain tropical diseases. Leprosy is one of 20th
diseases recognised as neglected tropical
disease (NTDs). According to the World Health
Organization, NTDs affect nearly 1.5 billion
people in 149 countries. Specific data for South
Sudan is not available yet. Given that general
reason, Leprosy and Neglected Diseases
Organization: South Sudan was conceived and
registered to respond to not only leprosy, but
also other neglected tropical diseases and health
related issues including: water and sanitation,
food & livelihood security, education and social
empowerment.

Health – health facility management, distribution of medicines / drugs, HIV/AIDs awareness
campaigns and linking cases to treatment centres for care and treatment.
Water Hygiene and Sanitation – rehabilitating existing water points (e.g., boreholes) and water
treatment, establishment of improved pit latrines, create hygienic environment.
Food and Livelihood Security – encourage and train those who are not yet infected by the diseases
to continue with on and off-season farming. Training on improved farming practices.
Education – primary and secondary schools support. Incentivize school attendances to encourage all
children girls and boys to attend schools. Psycho-social education and awareness in the schools.
Psycho-social support - under this, we have i) psycho-social education and awareness, ii) active
listening and community engagement, iii) skills building and empowerment, iv) recreational and
creative activities
